Our bodies have the capabilities of creating some interesting types of pain. From lower back pain, to whiplash after a car accident, there are many ways to find your way to a chiropractor’s front steps. One of the most common reasons for chiropractic care is Sciatica pain. Many people hear others talking about their flare-ups but don’t quite understand the severity of this problem.

What Is Sciatica Nerve Pain?

Sciatica is nerve pain from irritation of the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body. This nerve begins from the nerve roots in the spinal cord of the lower back, and extends through the rear area. This sends nerve endings down to the lower limb, creating lower back pain to pain behind the thigh and knee areas of the body.

This issue commonly occurs when a herniated disk, or bone spur on the spine compresses parts of the nerve. The pain involved with sciatica is very severe and can be associated with significant leg weakness, bowel changes, and bladder changes in bodily functions.

The Symptoms:

The symptoms of sciatica pain can vary from very mild aches to a sharp, excruciating pain. However the typical symptom of the pain is that it is something that radiates from the lower spine to the back of the leg. It is said to have the sensation of a jolt or electric shock.

Other symptoms include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Muscle Weakness in Affected Areas

The Cause:

Sciatica pain is something that can occur due to several underlying causes. The six most common reasons for sciatica induced pain are:

  • Lumbar Herniated Disc-This occurs when inner material of the disc leaks or pinches the nerve root
  • Degenerative Disc Disease-On some levels this can occur with natural aging
  • Isthmic Spondyloisthesis-A condition that occurs when a stress fracture allows a vertebral body to lean forward onto another
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction-The irritation of the sacroiliac joint which is located at the bottom of the spine
  • What are the Complication with Sciatica Pain?

Unfortunately, many people never truly recover from sciatica. However, without treatment, you are only putting yourself at risk for further nerve damage that can potentially be permanent. Some signs of permanent damage can be seen if you lose feeling in the affected leg, have weakness in the affected leg, or lose bowel and bladder function.

How Can Sciatica Pain Be Prevented?

A Dallas Chiropractor can examine a patient and determine what is causing a patients sciatica pain. Through treatments like Ice Therapy, ultrasound, and spinal adjustments, the pain that makes sciatic pain unbearable can be managed.
